A single furrow two-way horse plough, manufactured by Ransomes, Sims and Jefferies Ltd. of Ipswich, for use with one or two horses, has been donated to the Mill by a Walmley farm. Although the exact date of manufacture is unknown, old trade catalogues indicate that it was probably made sometime in the late 1800's or early 1900's. Ransomes produced a small range of cast or wrought iron frames that were later fitted with a selection of components, resulting in a wide variety of ploughs. The farmer could choose to have either one or two wheels, or even none, and select from a range of different plough shares and mould boards. This produced a plough to suit any particular requirement - an early "pick-and-mix" system. An early example of a one-way horse plough has been discovered in Kitzbuehel, Austria.
