News Archive - "Mills on the Air" - 2005

Each year, on National Mills Weekend, groups of amateur radio operators mark the event with Special Event Stations at some of the many mills open to visitors. They then attempt to establish radio contact with the other participating mills.

During our Open Day on the 8th May 2005,
Sutton Coldfield Amateur Radio Society once again installed an amateur radio station in the cart shed at New Hall Mill. Here they operated using the special radio callsign for the Mill, GB4NHM.

In just six hours on the Sunday, despite somewhat noisy conditions on the radio bands caused by an international contest, they succeeded in establishing two-way contact with 16 other mills operating in this annual event, although the event itself extends over two days. Of these 16, ten stations had been contacted during either 2003 or 2004 while the other six were new stations that were contacted for the first time in 2005.
